An impeccable base saves touch-ups. Test the dry-fit, glue in sections and leave joints ready for priming:- Adhesives for kits for firm, controlled joints.
- Cutting tools to remove parts with precision.
- Sandpaper and files to level joints in the hull and railings.
- Masking tape and crisp lines at the waterline.
- Precision tweezers for rigging, railings and photo-etch.
- Cutting mats to work comfortably and safely.
Primer and naval colour
Primer unifies materials and improves grip. Then apply the base coat and seal:- Primers (black/grey/white depending on the scheme).
- Full range of paints suitable for brush and airbrush.
- Varnishes: gloss to seal decals, matt/satin as the final finish.
Maritime weathering: rust, salt and wood
Ships gain realism with subtle effects and thin coats:- Washes for rivets, plate lines and grilles.
- Inks and filters for wood tones on decks and lifeboats.

- Winning sequence: dry-fit → controlled adhesive → touch-up with sandpaper/file → primer → base colour → decals over gloss varnish → washes/filters → final varnish.
- Clean waterline: mark with low-tack tape and apply thin coats to avoid steps.
- Believable wood: light base, grain with very diluted inks and a soft wash to unify.
- Rust and salt: work streaks from anchors, hawseholes and drains with very diluted washes in several passes.
